In the late winter of 1980, three Michigan Nurse Recruiters had a dream: to unite recruiter colleagues from Michigan’s two peninsulas in an effort to share ideas and mutual concerns while creating a united and cooperative networking system. On September 10, 1980, forty Nurse Recruiters, employment specialists and personnel directors made the Michigan Association of Nurse Recruiters (MANR) a reality when they ratified its charter. In time, their name changed to the Michigan Association of HealthCare Recruitment (MAHCR). Sadly, fifteen years later the chapter dissolved due to changes in the employment market resulting in vast hospital lay-offs and the need for recruiters had vanished.
In 2001, Michigan once again faced an impending health professional shortage and a group of nurse recruiters and employment specialists from West and Mid-Michigan began meeting quarterly to network. Three years later, a formal chapter was once again ratified and the Michigan Association of Health Care Recruitment (MiAHCR) was formed. The purpose of MiAHCR is to promote and exchange sound principles of professional recruitment and retention practice, which may be utilized by its membership for personal
and professional growth.
To date, only a little over one year after its’ awakening, MiAHCR has over 40 members, involving numerous healthcare organizations throughout the State of Michigan. Meetings are held every other month, facilitating a mixture of educational offerings with business meetings and networking opportunities. Community responsibility is also a focus of MiAHCR as seen in its scholarship program and its community outreach. The MiAHCR chapter coordinates an annual conference with the Health Care Recruiters Association of Metro Detroit (HCRAMD), uniting the two sister chapters for the purpose of knowledge and networking.
MiAHCR is a chapter of the North Central region of the National Association of Health Care Recruitment (NAHCR). Being part of a national organization affords MiACHR members the opportunity to network and grow through annual national conferences and ongoing updates through the Directions publication. It also affords our members the ability to become nationally credentialed through the “Certification for Health Care Recruiter” exam. Becoming a NAHCR member is not required, but is notably of benefit.
